Using a participatory community consultation process, the Balanbale community prioritized and raised funds locally and from the diaspora for the purchase of a firefighting truck and ambulance. However, after further discussions, the community decided that constructing a district airstrip is a more urgent priority that would better serve the wider population. A district airstrip would facilitate travel and create economic opportunities for the district and its residents.
The community has already completed all major construction work, but the remaining finishing touches will be co-funded by the Daryeel project through a matching grant. The final phase includes building a community waiting hall (terminal hall toilets: 2 male and 2 female), as well as apron earthworks and compaction for the Balanbale airstrip. The matching grant ratio is 1 to 4. The Daryeel project will match $80,000 of the community contribution. The total project cost, including community contributions and project matching, is $100,000.
This project aims to facilitate movement and travel, thereby creating economic opportunities and growth for the Balanbale community and local government. Community contributions and committees from various social groups for project implementation will enable collaboration, enhancing social cohesion and trust. Adequate services also help reduce potential tensions between community groups.
