Title: Easy access to clean water through community-led drilling of a borehole Through a participatory community consultation process, the Jiracle community in Mataban District, Hirshabelle State of Somalia prioritized the drilling of a borehole to get access to clean water, as the community is a pastoral community that has been drastically hit by drought due to failed seasons. They currently depend on water trucking from Qabno town, located around twenty-five (25) kilometers away from the village. Jiracle village falls under Mataban District in the Hiraan region of Hirshabelle State of Somalia, with an estimated population of 320 households. Additionally, there are several other permanent and semi-permanent settlements that depend on Jiracle village for public services, including water, education, and health. The communities residing in Jiracle are pastoral and the village is located along the tarmac road connecting Beledweyne to Mataban town, approximately 45 km from Beledweyne. The Jiracle community has shown great interest in participating in the matching grant initiative, where the community will co-fund their prioritized activity during the inclusive community consultation process, with an agreed ratio of 1:4. The community has no previous experience in the matching grant mechanism, and this is their first time participating in such an opportunity. Thus far, the community has established a Community Project Implementation Unit (CPIU) representing different sectors of the community, and they will lead the implementation of the selected priorities—from fundraising to the completion of the borehole drilling. For the matching grant, the Jiracle community will raise $20,000, and the project will match it with $80,000. The total estimated project cost is $100,000. The activity identification is a decision that the community has unanimously reached together with the local and regional administrations, as this contributes to both social cohesion and improved access to clean water. The community committees attended the participatory planning process and local fundraising training to empower and transfer skills to the selected Community Project Implementation Unit. Thank you for contributing towards improving access to clean water through joint fundraising that will promote social cohesion among the citizens residing in Jiracle and the neighboring villages in Mataban District through the drilling of the borehole.
