Title: Improving Access to Clean Water through Community-Led Borehole Drilling in Mirkasim Through a participatory community consultation process, the Mirkasim community in Mataban District, Hirshabelle State of Somalia prioritized the drilling of a borehole to gain access to clean water. The community, predominantly pastoralist, has been severely affected by drought due to repeated failed rainy seasons and currently relies on water trucking from Mataban town, which is approximately thirty (30) kilometers away. Mirkasim village, located in Mataban District in the Hiraan region of Hirshabelle State, has an estimated population of 350 households. In addition, several permanent and semi-permanent settlements also depend on Mirkasim for public services, including water, education, and health. The village lies approximately twenty (20) kilometers west of Mataban town. The Mirkasim community has expressed strong interest in participating in the matching grant initiative. Under this initiative, the community will co-fund the activity they prioritized during the inclusive consultation process with an agreed ratio of 1:4. This is the first time the Mirkasim community is engaging in a matching grant mechanism. To support the initiative, the community has established a Community Project Implementation Unit (CPIU), composed of members from various community sectors, who will lead the implementation from fundraising to the successful completion of the borehole. As part of the matching grant, the Mirkasim community will raise $20,000, and the project will match it with $80,000. The total estimated cost of the borehole project is $100,000. The activity identification was a unanimous decision between the community and the local and regional administrations, recognizing that the initiative would promote both social cohesion and improved access to clean water. Community committees also participated in the participatory planning process and received local fundraising training to build capacity and empower the CPIU. Thank you for contributing toward enhancing access to clean water through this joint fundraising effort. This initiative not only improves health and wellbeing in Mirkasim but also strengthens social cohesion among the citizens of Mirkasim and neighboring villages in Mataban District.
