IMPROVING DIVERSIFIED LIVELIHOODS THROUGH FENCING FARMS AND FARM INPUT DISTRIBUTION FOR QODQOD VILLAGE By Deegaan Bile Hirshabelle Project with Qodqod Community Using a participatory community consultation process, the Qodqod community prioritized the fencing of five productive farms and the distribution of farm inputs. Although farming is rarely practiced in Mataban district, the few existing farms are important sources of alternative livelihoods. This intervention aims to address the effects of climate change, which force communities to seek any means of survival, sometimes worsening the ongoing climate-induced challenges. Qodqod is a community in Mataban District with an estimated population of approximately 553 households. It is located 24 kilometers southeast of Mataban and 36 kilometers southwest of Guriceel town. Most public infrastructure services are lacking, and existing facilities such as the health post are not operational. The village is home to pastoralists and small-scale rainfed farmers who also keep livestock. Water is sourced from a borehole, with some families connected by pipes for domestic and agricultural use. Tree cutting is prohibited for residents and outsiders alike. The Qodqod community has shown strong interest in participating in the Deegaan Bile Hirshabelle project through a matching grant mechanism, which supplements community-raised funds at a set ratio. For this matching grant, the community proposed fencing and inputs for five productive farms that support the livelihoods of farm owners and other families sharing the crops. The fencing will protect farms from livestock grazing during dry spells, which currently causes significant loss of investment. The inputs will include environmentally friendly and economically viable seeds suitable for small-scale farming. This investment will benefit not only the targeted farmers but also the wider community, who will gain access to affordable farm products without needing to travel outside the village. This will enhance collaboration in buying and selling within the community. The matching grant ratio is set at 1 to 4, with the community expected to raise $10,000 ($2,000 per farm), matched by the project with $40,000, for a total project cost of $50,000. The fencing and farm input project was identified as a priority through an inclusive Community-Based Planning (CBP) process conducted in Qodqod in April 2023. This government-led, community-owned process brought together representatives from diverse socioeconomic groups to jointly assess local resources, analyze strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and identify community priorities. Thank you for contributing towards improving the livelihoods of farmers in Qodqod through farm fencing and the introduction of improved seeds and inputs.
