LIVESTOCK MARKET FOR MATABAN DISRICT

By Deegaan Bile Hirshabelle Project with Mataban District Communities

Using a participatory community consultation process, Mataban District prioritized the construction of a district livestock market. This will address improving the local economy as livestock is the primary source of income for the majority of the community in the district and other neighbouring vast rural pastoral communiites including on the Ethiopian side, other districts in Hirshabelle State and partially in Galmudug State.

Mataban district is in Hiraan region of Hirshabelle state of Somalia with an estimated population of 43,794 households. It lies on the main road that connects Hirshabelle and Galmudug States of Somalia. The tarmac road connects South, Central and Northern regions of Somalia, including Puntland, Galmuudug, Southwest and Banadir. Most public infrastructure services in Mataban have not been upgraded for a long time due to the drought and previous internal conflict between the communities in the district.

The Mataban community has shown great interest in participating in the Deegaan Bile matching grant project, which supplements the funds raised by the community at a set ratio. The community has no previous experience in initiating and co-financing projects. It is their first time to experience this opportunity. Thus far, communities have established a District Project Implementation Unit representing the community, and who will lead the implementation of the selected priorities from fundraising to completion of the market construction. For the matching grant with Deegaan Bile project, Mataban community will raise $20,000, and the project will match it with $80,000 in the ratio of 1 to 4. The total project cost estimated is $100,000.

The project identification is a decision the community has unanimously reached together with the Government, as this contributes to both social cohesion, and boosts the local economy. The community committees attended the participatory planning process and local fundraising training to empower and transfer skills to the selected district project implementation unit. The livestock market will attract livestock businesspeople to come to Mataban, to buy livestock for both local and international business. Currently, communities from Mataban t ravel more than 40 Kilometres to access the market and tax is paid to other districts.

Thank you for contributing towards improving the local economy that will promote social cohesion of the district through the construction of the livestock marketing with the funding from the community and the project.
