LIVESTOCK MARKET FOR MATABAN DISTRICT By Deegaan Bile Hirshabelle Project with Mataban District Communities Using a participatory community consultation process, the Mataban District prioritized the construction of a district livestock market. This initiative aims to improve the local economy, as livestock is the primary source of income for the majority of the community in the district, as well as neighboring vast rural pastoral communities, including those on the Ethiopian side, other districts in Hirshabelle State, and partially in Galmudug State. Mataban District is located in the Hiraan region of Hirshabelle State, Somalia, with an estimated population of 43,794 households. It lies along the main road connecting Hirshabelle and Galmudug States of Somalia. This tarmac road links the South, Central, and Northern regions of Somalia, including Puntland, Galmudug, Southwest, and Banadir. Most public infrastructure in Mataban has not been upgraded for a long time due to drought and past internal conflicts among communities in the district. The Mataban community has shown strong interest in participating in the Deegaan Bile matching grant project, which supplements funds raised by the community at a set ratio. This is the community’s first experience initiating and co-financing projects. Thus far, the community has established a District Project Implementation Unit (DPIU) representing the community, which will lead the implementation of priorities from fundraising to the completion of the market construction. For the matching grant, the Mataban community will raise $20,000, which will be matched by the project with $80,000 at a ratio of 1 to 4. The total estimated project cost is $100,000. The project was identified through a unanimous decision by the community together with the Government, recognizing its potential to both foster social cohesion and boost the local economy. Community committees participated in the participatory planning process and local fundraising training to empower and equip the DPIU with necessary skills. The livestock market is expected to attract livestock businesspeople to Mataban to buy livestock for both local and international trade. Currently, communities from Mataban travel more than 40 kilometers to access markets elsewhere and pay taxes to other districts. Thank you for contributing towards improving the local economy and promoting social cohesion in the district through the construction of the livestock market, funded jointly by the community and the project.
